NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Mikey Thompson will serve as Christopher Newport's interim men's lacrosse coach for the upcoming 2016 season after spending the past four years as the Captains' assistant coach.
Thompson assumed his role as the interim men's lacrosse coach after Todd Boward asked for and was granted a leave of absence for the 2016 season.
Since arriving at CNU in the fall of 2011, Thompson has played an integral role in the most successful stretch in program history. He helped the Captains secure their first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and has helped oversee the squad's transition to the Capital Athletic Conference during the past two years.
Since joining the CAC, Thompson has helped Christopher Newport post a 10-6 record in 2014 and a program-best 11-5 mark in 2015. Last season, he also helped the Captains finish third in the regular season standings following a 6-2 record in league action.
Prior to arriving in Newport News, Thompson competed collegiately and served as a student assistant coach at the University of Virginia. Capping off his time on the field, he was one of the Cavaliers' three captains during the team's 2010 ACC title run. The following season, after moving to the sidelines, he kicked off his coaching career during UVa's national championship campaign in 2011.
Following his time at Virginia, Thompson was also selected in the 2011 Supplemental Draft by the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse.
Along with Thompson, Zach Thomas will remain on the coaching staff as an assistant in 2016. Thomas has been with the Captains since 2014 following a successful stint as an All-American player and coach at Roanoke.
Christopher Newport will open up the 2016 campaign on February 11 when the team hosts Washington & Lee at 7 p.m.
